House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series that serves as a prequel to Game of Thrones. The show takes place 200 years before the original program through its adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. The series tells the story of House Targaryen by depicting their internal struggle that leads to the Dance of the Dragons civil war which breaks out between two rival claimants of the Iron Throne.
The first two seasons showed viewers how Targaryen family members fought against each other through their political battles, dragon combat, and their changing alliances. The main characters include Rhaenyra Targaryen who wants to take her father’s throne and her half-brother Aegon II, whom their stepmother, Alicent Hightower, supports.
The show examines how power dynamics, loyalty relationships, and legacy values operate within a medieval-themed setting of Westeros. Season 3 will continue the story that began in Season 2 which ended with armies advancing and dragons getting ready to battle. The new season will begin its premiere on HBO in June 2026 and it will be available for streaming on HBO Max.
House of the Dragon season 3: Production updates and release timeline

The production of Season 3 started at Leavesden Studios in England during March 2025 and ended after seven months of shooting in October 2025. The production team included many members who returned to work with showrunner Ryan Condal. The post-production process has started to work on editing and visual effects and sound design which will create the epic battles and dragon sequences.
HBO plans to premiere its new show in June 2026 because the network wants to broadcast important episodes during the period that starts after the Emmy eligibility window which ends on May 31. The timeline for this project follows the same schedule as Season 2 which was filmed during 2023 and premiered in 2024. The season will consist of eight episodes, maintaining the show’s format. The writing process for Season 4 has begun because HBO wants to complete the story across four seasons.

Anticipated plot developments in House of the Dragon season 3

After House of the Dragon season 2 ended its story, season 3 begins its narrative through an introduction that centers on the main character’s battles between opposing forces. The opening scene will depict the Battle of the Gullet, which shows a large naval conflict that features both dragons and naval ships and leads to major fatalities which include Prince Jacaerys and his dragon Vermax. Rhaenyra’s forces will continue their assault on King’s Landing, which results in the city’s capture and her short period of rule as queen.
The events of the story include the Battle at the God’s Eye, which shows Daemon fighting against Aemond, while dragonseeds Hugh Hammer and Ulf White may betray their side. The northern armies, which Cregan Stark leads, will move toward the south to assist Rhaenyra. The season will feature eight episodes, which will focus on extensive battle sequences and political strategy competitions.
Changes from the source material
The show uses material from Fire and Blood but creates different adaptations for its third season which follows the original book. The show presents a major alteration through Alicent Hightower’s assistance to Rhaenyra who uses her power to open the gates for her takeover of King’s Landing, which the original text does not include because the city falls during Aemond’s departure. The show mixes together the Battle of the Gullet and the Fall of King’s Landing to create theatrical effects.
The historical account Fire and Blood presents its content with uncertain elements, which allow the series to create new information while maintaining existing details. The series develops dragon dreams together with the driving forces behind Helaena Targaryen’s visions. The changes in the story focus on improving television storytelling while maintaining the fundamental elements of the Civil War.
