Black Clover Season 2 officially returned on October 3, 2026, continuing the anime more than five years after the original TV run ended. The first series concluded with Episode 170, “The Faraway Future,” on March 30, 2021, after 170 episodes.
The previous season ended with Asta preparing to master the power of his devil, Liebe, after Nacht used a forbidden technique to bring the devil out. Meanwhile, Yuno and the other Magic Knights were preparing to gain enough strength to defeat the Dark Triad and rescue Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance. Season 2 begins from that point, with the Clover Kingdom preparing its counterattack against the Spade Kingdom.
Episode 171, titled “The Battle Begins,” picks up with Asta and Liebe undergoing training to master Devil Union, while Yuno trains to overcome Zenon and save Vangeance. At the same time, the Spade Kingdom’s plans involving the underworld continue moving forward. The episode establishes that the time skip has not changed the central objective: the Magic Knights must rescue the captured captains before the Dark Triad’s plan reaches its next stage.
What Happened During the Black Clover Season 2 Time Skip?

The time skip in Black Clover Season 2 does not simply move the story forward without explanation. Season 2 episode 1 immediately shows that the characters have spent the intervening period preparing for the confrontation with the Dark Triad. Asta’s training is centered on his connection with Liebe and the power of his anti-magic, while Yuno is focused on overcoming Zenon, the member of the Dark Triad who previously defeated him and destroyed much of the Golden Dawn.
The difference between the two training paths is important. Asta has to learn how to use the power supplied by his devil without losing control of it. Episode 170 established this as the next major obstacle after Nacht introduced him to the devil-binding ritual. Asta’s answer was not simply to overpower Liebe; he approached the situation in his own unconventional way, setting up the training that continues into the new season.
Yuno’s motivation is more directly connected to the losses suffered by the Golden Dawn. He wants to defeat Zenon and rescue William Vangeance, who was taken by the Spade Kingdom. The official Black Clover season 2 episode 171 synopsis confirms that Yuno has been training for exactly that purpose.
The wider Magic Knights have also spent this period preparing an attack. Yami and Vangeance remain in the hands of the Dark Triad, making their rescue the immediate objective. Meanwhile, the Spade Kingdom continues its preparations for opening the gates to the underworld, giving the Clover Kingdom a limited window to act.
Asta and Liebe’s training becomes the key to the next battle

Episode 170 left Asta at a crucial point. Nacht’s forbidden ritual had brought out the devil that had been connected to Asta’s anti-magic, forcing Asta to confront the source of that power directly. Nacht explained that Asta would need to defeat and subjugate the devil if he wanted to use its strength properly. Rather than following a conventional approach, Asta made an unexpected proposal during the confrontation with Liebe.
Season 2 episode 1 then resumes with Asta and Liebe training under Nacht. The objective is to achieve Devil Union, allowing Asta to draw on Liebe’s power more effectively. This is not presented as a finished ability at the start of the episode. Instead, the episode establishes the training as one of the final preparations before the Magic Knights launch their operation against the Spade Kingdom.
The importance of this training comes directly from what happened before the time skip. Asta had already seen how far below the Dark Triad’s level he was during the earlier conflict. Yami was captured, and Asta could not prevent the situation from reaching that point. His new training therefore has a specific purpose rather than being another general power-up.
Episode 171 keeps the focus on that progression. Asta is not simply stronger because several months have passed; his improvement is tied to mastering the devil whose anti-magic has been central to his development throughout the series. That makes his relationship with Liebe one of the most important elements going into the new battle.
Yuno has a different reason for preparing for the Spade Kingdom
Yuno enters season 2 carrying the consequences of the Dark Triad’s attack on the Golden Dawn. Earlier, Zenon invaded the kingdom and defeated Yuno before taking William Vangeance. Episode 168 had already established Yuno’s determination to become stronger after the attack, while Episode 170 showed that he and the other Magic Knights were preparing for another confrontation with the Dark Triad.
Episode 171 makes Yuno’s objective more specific. During the time skip, he has been training with the intention of defeating Zenon and rescuing Vangeance. This gives his preparation a personal dimension that is separate from Asta’s training with Liebe. Both rivals are getting ready for the same war, but they are approaching it through different challenges.
Yuno’s position is also significant because the Golden Dawn suffered severe losses during the Dark Triad’s attack. His determination is therefore connected not only to his rivalry with Asta but also to his responsibility as a member and vice-captain of the squad. The previous season had already shown Yuno taking the attack seriously during the Magic Knights’ response to the crisis.
By the beginning of Black Clover season 2, the goal is no longer simply to survive another encounter with Zenon. Yuno has spent the intervening period preparing specifically for a rematch. Episode 171 uses this preparation to establish how much the upcoming confrontation matters to him before the larger operation against the Spade Kingdom begins.
The Spade Kingdom is preparing for something far bigger than a rescue
While Asta and Yuno prepare in the Clover Kingdom, the threat inside the Spade Kingdom continues to develop. The previous season established that Yami and William were captured because the Dark Triad needed them for the ritual connected to opening the gates of the underworld. Episode 168 introduced this objective when the two captains were taken to the Spade Kingdom for the ritual known as the Advent of Qliphoth.
Episode 171 adds another important figure to that side of the conflict. Morris, a magic researcher who had been pursued by the Diamond Kingdom, is in the Spade Kingdom and is working on the preparations to open the gates of the underworld. His involvement means the threat is progressing even while the Clover Kingdom’s Magic Knights are training.
This is why the time skip does not represent a peaceful gap in the story. The Dark Triad’s objective has continued moving forward, while the Clover Kingdom has been using the available time to prepare its strongest fighters. The result is a direct collision between the two sides.
By the end of episode 171, the story has moved from preparation toward the actual confrontation. The Magic Knights are readying their elite forces for an attack designed to recover Yami and Vangeance, while the Spade Kingdom’s preparations bring the two sides closer to open war.
