Joe Frazier was born on January 12, 1944, in Beaufort, South Carolina, he was the 12th of sharecroppers Rubin and Dolly Frazier’s children. Living in the small rural community of Laurel Bay, Frazier’s family farmed a 10-acre farm where they used to grow crops like watermelons and cotton. Joe had a great bond with his father when he was born his father lost his left hand in a tractor accident due to which Joe knew that the farm life is not easy.
In the early 1950s, Joe’s family purchased a black-and-white television which turned him into a boxing fan by watching games from the greatest like Sugar Ray Robinson and Rocky Marciano. Encouraged by his uncle’s words that he might be the next Joe Louis, Frazier fashioned a homemade punching bag out of a burlap sack stuffed with rags, corncobs, a brick, and Spanish moss. He suspended it from an oak tree to hone his punches.
At age 15, Joe fought with a white employer and as a result, he decided to move to New York to live with his brother. Right after that, he came to Philadelphia, where he never had a perfect life as found a job in a slaughterhouse. Frazier’s passion for boxing grew stronger, and he began training at local gyms.
