Lexy manipulates Anna into coming out to meet her, but is subsequently murdered by Priya, whose crime is covered up by evidence that implicates her. Through both Anna’s and Jack’s perspectives, as the story is told through the investigation that Anna reports and Jack leads, secrets are exposed, including Anna’s assault that was not reported, Jack’s adultery, and Alice’s dementia, which is a ruse. Alice, who is driven by the discovery of the assault through Anna’s cassette tapes from her past, following her grief over Charlotte’s death, masterminds the murders to protect her daughter.
She kills Rachel because she saw the affair, Helen to keep Anna occupied, and Zoe so that she can reunite her family by making her child an orphan to be adopted. The story develops through the use of flashbacks, which reveal the cruelty of the clique and Catherine’s other tragedy of killing her sister by accident. The themes of love and invisibility propel the story, as Alice employs her cleaning job as a means of access and deception. The series sustains the suspense through the use of alternating suspicions, which lead to personal reckonings.
The ending of His & Hers: Revelations and family reconciliation
In the series finale of His & Hers, one year later, Anna and Jack have reunited, adopted Zoe’s daughter Meg, and Anna is pregnant. While visiting Alice’s house, Anna discovers a confessional letter from her mother, exposing Alice as the real killer. Alice confesses to killing Rachel, Helen, and Zoe in revenge for the assault on Anna at high school, which she discovered through tapes. She framed Lexy by planting evidence and manipulating circumstances to rebuild Anna’s life, including the cancellation of reservations to facilitate confrontations.
Alice used ageism and misogyny to her advantage, pretending to have dementia to seem harmless, and believed her actions were protective love. The letter is a repetition of the series’ theme: “There are at least two sides to every story.” Anna finally opens up to Jack about her experiences, and they gain a better understanding. They choose to take care of Alice and her grandmother, creating an extended family in their new Atlanta house.
The series ends with Anna and Alice sharing a look, as Anna’s slight smile shows that she has accepted what her mother has done. The part that has not been resolved is whether Anna reveals the confession, particularly because Zoe was Jack’s sister.
