Chaos: The Manson Murders is an upcoming documentary film directed by Errol Morris, premiered on Netflix on March 7, 2025. The film delves into the infamous 1969 murders orchestrated by Charles Manson, offering a fresh perspective on the events and exploring alternative theories surrounding the motives behind the crimes.
Morris investigates potential connections between the Manson Family murders and the CIA’s MKUltra mind-control program, as well as the influence of LSD, challenging the conventional narrative that the killings were solely an attempt to incite a race war. Through interviews, archival footage, and comprehensive analysis, the documentary encourages viewers to reconsider established explanations and reflect on the complexities of the case.
Chaos: The Manson Murders is co-produced by Morris and is adapted from the 2019 nonfiction book CHAOS: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties by Tom O’Neill with Dan Piepenbring. The film aims to shed new light on one of America’s most notorious criminal cases, prompting audiences to question the accepted history of the Manson murders.
Who was Charles Manson in Chaos: The Manson Murders?
Charles Manson was born on November 12, 1934, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Kathleen Maddox, a 16-year-old unmarried mother. His early life was marked by instability; his mother was imprisoned for robbery when he was young, leaving him in the care of relatives. Manson spent much of his youth in reform schools and juvenile centers due to behavioral issues.
By his teens, he had developed a pattern of petty theft and truancy. As an adult, he drifted between various odd jobs and periods of incarceration, marrying briefly twice—first to Rosalie Willis in 1955, with whom he had a son, Charles Manson Jr., and later to Leona Stevens in 1959, fathering another son, Charles Luther Manson.
In the 1960s, Manson moved to California, where he became immersed in the counterculture movement. He formed a communal group known as the Manson Family, attracting mostly young followers with his charisma and apocalyptic philosophies influenced by Scientology, the Bible, and the Beatles. An aspiring musician, he recorded songs and mingled with figures like Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson. Manson died on November 19, 2017, in a Bakersfield hospital while serving a life sentence.
The Truth Behind Charles Manson’s Crimes

Charles Manson was convicted for orchestrating a series of murders in 1969, carried out by members of his Manson Family commune in California. Although he did not personally commit the killings, Manson directed his followers to execute them as part of his delusional plan to incite a race war he called Helter Skelter, inspired by his interpretation of The Beatles’ song and apocalyptic visions.
On August 8–9, 1969, the first attack targeted the home of actress Sharon Tate and director Roman Polanski in Los Angeles. Tate, who was eight months pregnant, was stabbed 16 times, and four others—Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski, Abigail Folger, and Steven Parent—were also killed. Manson instructed his followers, including Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Charles “Tex” Watson, to make the scene gruesome and leave a message in blood.
The following night, August 9–10, Manson accompanied his group to the home of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in Los Feliz. He tied up the couple before leaving, instructing Watson, Krenwinkel, and Leslie Van Houten to kill them. Leno was stabbed 12 times, and Rosemary was stabbed 41 times, with messages like “War” and “Helter Skelter” written in blood at the scene.
Manson was arrested in October 1969 during a raid at Barker Ranch. In 1971, he was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy, receiving a death sentence later commuted to life imprisonment after California abolished the death penalty in 1972. He remained in prison until he died in 2017.
