Back home, she suspects her friends are hiding a deadly secret and wonders if they’d kill again to keep it hidden.
Is Deadly Girls Trip Based on a True Story?

Deadly Girls Trip is a film by Leo McGuigan, based on actual events and tied to Shanquella Robinson’s case. On October 28, 2022, 25-year-old Shanquella went out for a sophisticated night at Cabo San Lucas’s luxurious mansion with her six friends, three men and three women.
The next day, her friends called a doctor, saying she was sick from too much alcohol. The doctor found her dehydrated and unable to speak clearly and suggested taking her to a hospital. Her friends refused, wanting her treated at the mansion. Despite efforts by the doctor and paramedics, Shanquella died around 6 p.m. At first, her death was blamed on alcohol poisoning.
Later, an autopsy showed she died from a severe spinal cord injury and neck damage, leading police to investigate further. A video leaked online showing a fight between Shanquella and one of her friends added to the case’s mystery. In Deadly Girls Trip, Janice dies on a trip with friends who say alcohol caused it, mirroring parts of Shanquella’s story. McGuigan likely took ideas from this event, adding drama to the movie.
Who was Shanquella Robinson?
Shanquella Brenada Robinson was born on January 9, 1997, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Bernard and Salamondra Robinson. Raised in a close-knit family, she graduated from West Charlotte High School in 2015. She had an affinity for branding kids’ hair while growing up, being intent on becoming a hairstylist. She also had an entrepreneurial spirit and owned various businesses, including women’s clothing line called Exquisite Boutique and a children’s hair-braiding service called Exquisite Kids.
Shanquella was known on social media for her cheerful posts about her work and travels. On October 28, 2022, Shanquella, then 25, went to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for a vacation with six friends. The group stayed at a luxury rental, Villa Linda 32. The next day, October 29, her friends called a doctor, saying she was unwell. They told her mother, Salamondra, she had alcohol poisoning.
A physician and paramedics attempted to resuscitate her, but she passed away at 5:57 p.m. Initially, her friends claimed it was an accident due to excessive drinking. But an autopsy later revealed that she died of a severe spinal cord injury and a broken neck, not alcohol intoxication. A video appeared online where one of her friends was seen beating her in their rental. Mexican authorities began investigating it as a case of femicide and sent out an arrest warrant for one of her friends. The FBI also became involved, but no arrests have been made to date.
