What happened to The Children of October 7?
As per CBS News’s reporting, on October 7, 2023, Hamas perpetrated a lethal assault on Israel, where more than 1,200 individuals lost their lives and about 250 were abducted, among whom were 42 children. The documentary The Children of October 7 covers the traumatic ordeal of child survivors of this assault.
Directed by Asaf Becker and starring Montana Tucker, the documentary brings first-hand accounts from children who experienced unimaginable horrors, including watching family members die or getting hostage.
One of the survivors, 11-year-old Yael Idan, recounted, “I couldn’t breathe” as she saw her sister killed and her father taken hostage. Another survivor, Rotam Mattias, shared that his mother died protecting him during the attack.
The documentary also tells the story of 12-year-old Eitan Yahalomi, who was held hostage in Gaza for 52 days before being released. His father, Ohad Yahalomi, was also kidnapped and later died in captivity, with his body returned in February 2025.
Montana Tucker, who conducted the interviews, expressed her admiration for the children’s resilience, stating, “I was interviewing them and I’m having to look them in the eyes, and I said to myself ‘I can’t be the one to break down now. If they’re staying strong, I have to stay strong for them'”.
Montana Tucker’s Role and Reflections on The Children of October 7
Montana Tucker, social media activist and granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, was a central figure in The Children of October 7, a documentary that had its world premiere at Jerusalem’s Museum of Tolerance in December 2024.
At the premiere, Tucker told the Jerusalem Post that her late grandfather and ailing grandmother, both Auschwitz survivors, would be proud of what she was doing. My mom says my zayde lives inside of me,” she said, adding that he had a tendency to tell his Holocaust tale to everyone. “My grandparents taught me to be strong, never give up, and stand up for what’s right.
Tucker interviewed young survivors like Eitan Yahalomi, who was held captive in Gaza for 52 days after his father was killed, and Ella Shani, whose father died in Be’eri. She highlighted the presence of a psychologist on set to support the children as they shared traumatic experiences, such as Eitan being beaten and forced to watch violent videos.
At the premiere, attended by President Isaac Herzog, Tucker compared October 7 denial to Holocaust denial, saying, “Hamas livestreamed what they were doing; they weren’t hiding it.”
The documentary, streaming on Paramount+ from April 23, 2025, uses survivor accounts and Hamas footage to tell these stories.
