The episode commences with John Nolan apprehending Ezra Kane for attempting to gain unauthorized entry into the Willoughby Recreation Center after hours. Ezra Kane is depicted as being homeless, but his fingerprints match those found on an unsolved double homicide case from rural Oregon, where a married couple was stabbed, and their 16-year-old daughter, Samantha, was reported missing. Nolan’s interrogation does not reveal that Kane is being charged for murder but centers on Kane’s stolen credit cards, where traces lead to a motel room.

There, Lucy Chen and Celina Juarez find Samantha, who has been malnourished, abused, and scared after almost three years of confinement. She has also been brainwashed into believing that Kane is “Amon,” who commands demons, including policemen, and that fleeing would put her family in harm’s way. In addition, there are drawings on the walls of the prison showing “Amon,” who is depicted as having horns, in company with policemen, who have writings such as “my soulmate.”

Kane confesses to having planned to kill Samantha because of boredom after kidnapping 15-year-old Julie as a replacement. He demands a supervised goodbye to Samantha, which is refused, leading him to provide the clue: “Tell her Julie is near the red place.” Parallel events include Miles Penn checking on injured colleague Seth Ridley, who apologizes after lashing out, and Tim Bradford helping Lucy unpack in their new home. Angela Lopez and Wesley Evers overlook their anniversary but share a simple dinner. The story builds tension through the investigation and personal interactions.

The arrest of Ezra Kane starts out as a minor incident of trespassing, but it quickly spirals out of control because of Kane’s fingerprint matching him to the murders of Samantha’s parents. Kane confesses during an interrogation, giving up his right to an attorney, that he pretended to hide Samantha’s parents’ murders from her so that he can keep her under control by playing the role of a biblical demon, to whom Samantha believes Kane has access to supernatural powers.

Kane goes from weak to sinister upon hearing of the motel being searched, confirming that he planned to murder Samantha, and revealing that Julie is abducted by him. The law enforcement personnel discovered evidential items, including blood smears, dropped keys, and Julie’s student identification, in the trunk of a sedan at the recreation center. Kane is prosecuted for kidnapping, attempted murder, false imprisonment, and murder in Oregon.

His deception involves mental manipulation, including establishing triggers that do not let the victim escape or reveal any details. Nolan also applies rapport-building methods, including offering nourishment and using dislike of cold, to obtain more information. The crime cases reflect Kane’s sociopathic behavior, as victims are subjected to torture, rape, and brainwashing. Samantha’s discovery in the motel shows she stayed there for hours without seeking help, due to conditioning.

Julie is found bound and injured but alive. The investigation involves the full team, including Harper and Lopez, who permit Nolan to lead parts of the questioning. Kane’s confessions come as officers press him, exposing the extent of his actions.

The search begins after tracing stolen credit cards to a motel, where Chen and Juarez locate Samantha. She is hospitalized, and her fragmented memories, including street signs and a water tower, aid in locating Julie. Nolan and Tim Bradford search the recreation center, discovering Julie in a car trunk. Samantha believes Kane will return for her and feels unsafe, reflecting deep brainwashing.

At the hospital, overhearing the phrase about Julie triggers a panic, leading Samantha to barricade herself and attempt self-harm with a syringe. Lucy intervenes, sharing her own kidnapping experience from Season 2 to calm her. The team uses clues from Samantha and Kane’s hints to narrow the search. Julie’s bloodied ID is found in Kane’s hidden vehicle, confirming her location in a parking lot. The rescue operation involves coordination, with Nolan finding Julie with non-life-threatening injuries.

Samantha cooperates after being calmed, providing further details. The search underscores the urgency, as Kane intended to replace Samantha with Julie. Officers handle the victims carefully, recognizing their trauma. The process reveals clothes in a jungle area, initially suggesting Samantha’s death. The team’s efforts result in both victims’ survival.

Unraveling The Red Place in The Rookie

The Red Place refers to a red-painted room in an abandoned house where Kane inflicted physical and psychological punishment on Samantha early in her captivity. It also functions as a post-hypnotic trigger phrase conditioned over years to evoke fear of imminent pain, prompting self-harm. When Samantha overhears officers mention it, she screams that police work for Amon, barricades the door, and stabs her forearms with a syringe.

This demonstrates how abuse rewired her responses to prevent escape or disclosure. The phrase symbolizes Kane’s control, representing a space of enforced fear and punishment. It triggers extreme distress, illustrating the enduring impact of trauma beyond physical confinement. Kane uses it remotely during interrogation to manipulate the situation. The room and phrase reveal Kane’s tactics of psychological manipulation, showing how he maintained dominance over victims.

Samantha’s reaction highlights that hearing it causes freezing followed by panic. The explanation emerges through victim accounts and Kane’s admissions. It underscores the human cost, with victims needing extensive therapy. The trigger’s power is evident in Samantha’s self-harm attempt, stopped by intervention. Overall, it exposes the depth of Kane’s chilling crimes.
