Netflix’s Below is a six-episode thriller set in the Newfoundland community of Snook’s Arm. The series follows fisherman Calvin Penney (Josh Hartnett), his son Wade (Charlie Heaton), and marine researcher Dr. Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis) as a mysterious creature begins terrorizing the town. What initially looks like a straightforward sea-monster story turns into something more complicated, connecting the creature to Calvin’s childhood trauma, Wade’s strange symptoms, an old resettlement scheme, and the Crocker family’s plans for the town. So, what exactly is the creature in Below? Does Calvin kill it, why does he eventually help it, and what does the final shot of the icebergs mean?
What happens in Below?
The story begins with Calvin still carrying the trauma of his father Leo’s death decades earlier. When Calvin was a child, his family was being moved from Little Pot Rock to Snook’s Arm when something attacked their house as it was being towed across the water. Calvin survived, but his father disappeared beneath the surface. Forty years later, Snook’s Arm is facing another possible resettlement, with the town’s struggling fishing industry and residents being offered money to leave.
Then a huge iceberg appears in the harbor. Calvin and marine researcher Fonda Howander begin investigating the strange material associated with the ice, while Wade becomes increasingly affected by the creature. He experiences unusual thirst, strange dreams, and a disturbing connection to whatever is beneath the water. The creature eventually attacks boats and people around Snook’s Arm, leading Calvin to believe that it must be destroyed.
Calvin’s investigation eventually takes him back to Little Pot Rock, where he discovers that his understanding of his father’s death and the town’s history was incomplete. The Crocker family has been pushing the community toward resettlement for its own financial interests. Beneath the area are valuable deposits of cobalt and copper, giving the Crockers a reason to want the residents gone. At the same time, Fonda discovers that the enormous iceberg is actually connected to the creature’s reproduction.
What is the creature in Below?

The creature is a giant, highly intelligent female deep-water cephalopod — essentially a massive squid-like creature. The locals call her Mudder. Fonda eventually determines that the creature is unlike any known species in the scientific record and discovers that the enormous iceberg in the harbor is connected to her reproduction. The ice contains her eggs.
That discovery changes the meaning of much of what happened earlier in the season. Mudder isn’t attacking Snook’s Arm simply because she is a monster looking for people to kill; she is protecting her nest. Her natural environment is the much colder Deep Arctic, and the series connects her appearance near Newfoundland to environmental changes that have disrupted that habitat. The warmer conditions have forced her into a new environment, where she has attempted to protect her offspring.
That also explains why Mudder reacts so aggressively whenever people approach the iceberg. From her perspective, the humans are threats to her young. Fonda’s research also reveals that the creature’s effects on people, including Wade’s strange symptoms, are connected to material associated with the creature. The explanation doesn’t make Mudder harmless, as she has killed people and destroyed vessels, but it changes her role from a mindless monster into a mother trying to protect her offspring.
What happens to the main characters?

Calvin begins the series convinced that his family has been cursed. By the finale, he realizes that isn’t true and begins to understand the events that have shaped his life differently. He also repairs his relationship with Wade, after spending much of the series treating his son as someone who needs to be protected from the sea rather than someone capable of handling himself. After escaping Little Pot Rock, Calvin finally admits that he was wrong to keep Wade off the boats.
Wade survives the events of the series. His strange connection to Mudder is finally put into context, and he becomes an important part of the plan to move the creature’s nest away from Snook’s Arm. The finale also changes his relationship with his father, as Calvin finally trusts him on the water. By the end, Wade is able to work alongside his father rather than being treated simply as someone who needs protection.
Fonda survives and becomes increasingly protective of Mudder. Her scientific curiosity initially drives her investigation, but she eventually realizes that destroying the creature would mean destroying something that may be extraordinarily rare. When Jim Crocker offers her access to the creature’s remains after it is killed, Fonda refuses. Fonda also begins developing a closer relationship with Calvin, although the finale leaves that relationship open rather than turning it into a fully established romance.
The Crockers’ plan is exposed, but they aren’t completely defeated. They wanted residents out of Snook’s Arm because of the valuable mineral deposits beneath the town, and the creature’s presence gave them an opportunity to push that plan forward. Their immediate effort fails when Calvin and the others find another solution, but their interest in the town remains.
Below finale explained
The finale begins with Snook’s Arm being evacuated while the military prepares to deal with Mudder. The Crockers are willing to let the creature’s presence become the justification for clearing the area. Fonda then discovers the most important piece of information: the iceberg is Mudder’s nest and contains her eggs. The water around Snook’s Arm is too warm for the eggs to survive.
That gives Calvin an alternative to killing Mudder. Instead, he can move the nest. Calvin, Wade, and the rest of the family work together to break the giant iceberg into pieces that can be towed away from the harbor, using their knowledge of working with ice to move the remaining section into deeper water. The plan is dangerous, but it gives Mudder a chance to follow her nest away from the town. The Crockers still want the military to attack, with Jim Crocker attempting to push the authorities toward an airstrike, but the military ultimately refuses.
Calvin succeeds in getting the iceberg away from Snook’s Arm. He then cuts the final rope and allows Mudder to follow the iceberg instead of fighting her. Calvin has spent his life trying to protect his own family, and he finally recognizes that Mudder is doing the same for her young. The town survives, and the immediate threat is gone, but Mudder’s story is not quite finished.
Is the creature dead?

Yes — but not because Calvin kills her. The finale explains that Mudder dies naturally after spawning. Fonda explains that the creature’s reproductive cycle is fatal, with the mother eventually dying after producing her offspring and giving the remaining resources of her body to the next generation. In Mudder’s case, there is another problem: her eggs don’t survive.
Fonda later checks the eggs she preserved and confirms that none survived because the water is too warm. Calvin’s decision therefore saves Mudder from being killed in an airstrike, but it cannot solve the larger environmental problem threatening her species. He saves the creature from humans, but he cannot save her from the environmental conditions that forced her out of her natural habitat in the first place.
What does the ending mean?
The Below ending shifts the story away from a simple “man versus monster” conflict. At first, Calvin believes the creature is the biggest threat facing Snook’s Arm, but by the finale he realizes that Mudder is also a victim of forces beyond her control. The same is true of Calvin and his community, which is being pushed out of its home by economic pressure. Meanwhile, the Crockers want access to the resources beneath the town, while Mudder has been pushed away from her natural environment by changing conditions.
That creates a parallel between Calvin and the creature: both are trying to protect what remains of their families. The environmental message is also important, as the series connects Mudder’s movement into Newfoundland with warming conditions and the loss of the cold environment she needs. Fonda’s final observation makes the point especially clearly, as the eggs cannot survive in the current conditions and the water is getting warmer. The ending therefore isn’t a conventional victory.
Snook’s Arm gets a reprieve, but the larger problems haven’t disappeared. The Crockers are still interested in the town, the climate is still changing, and the final image suggests that whatever is happening in the waters around Newfoundland may be much larger than what the characters have already experienced. The series leaves those larger questions unresolved rather than providing a simple happy ending.
What do the final icebergs mean?
The final scene shows Calvin and Wade back on the water, reflecting how their relationship has changed and how Wade is finally trusted to work alongside his father. Then they see more enormous icebergs appearing on the horizon. The show does not explicitly confirm that these icebergs are additional nests or that they contain more creatures like Mudder. That leaves their meaning open to interpretation.
One possibility is that the icebergs represent the continuing environmental changes that brought Mudder into the area in the first place. Another possibility is that they point toward other creatures or nests, but the series does not establish that as fact. The safest reading is that the final shot deliberately leaves the larger ecological mystery unresolved.
Is there a Below season 2?

There is no confirmed Season 2 at this time. Netflix presents Below as a six-episode limited series, with all six episodes released together on October 8, 2026. The ending leaves room for another story, with the Crockers still interested in the town, environmental changes continuing, and the final icebergs introducing an unanswered question. However, those elements should not be treated as confirmation that Netflix has ordered another season.
As of October 8, 2026, Netflix has not announced a Season 2 renewal. For now, Below should be treated as a completed limited series unless Netflix announces otherwise.
