War Machine’s development began in November 2021, when Patrick Hughes was brought on to direct and write the film for Lionsgate, with Alan Ritchson attached as the star. Netflix acquired distribution rights in September 2024 and added Dennis Quaid and Stephan James and other cast members to the project. The main filming process began on September 16, 2024, in Victoria, Australia and finished on December 14, 2024. The production team filmed extra scenes at various New Zealand sites which included Wanaka and Queenstown and Alexandra.

Gelareh Kiazand handled cinematography. The production companies are Lionsgate, Hidden Pictures, Huge Film, Range Media Partners, and Emu Creek Pictures. Producers include Todd Lieberman, Alex Young, Patrick Hughes, Greg McLean, and Rich Cook, with Scott O’Brien as executive at Lionsgate and Valerie Bleth Sharp as executive producer. The film entered post-production after filming ended, leading to its March 2026 release. This collaboration highlights Netflix’s interest in action sci-fi content.
