Michael (2026): What the biopic chooses to show—and what it avoids

The biopic Michael (2026) provides a glimpse into the life of Michael Jackson, known as the King of Pop. It traces his journey from a young talent discovered as the lead singer of the Jackson 5 to a visionary solo artist driven by creative ambition. The film highlights his off-stage life, family moments, and some of his most iconic early performances, offering viewers a front-row seat to his rise as one of the world’s biggest entertainers.

Scenes include Jackson caring for children with cancer, dancing with a girl in a wheelchair, and family interactions around a kitchen table, set against a medley of his famous songs. The story aims to present Jackson’s triumphs and personal sides through recreations of key career moments, such as applying “Thriller” zombie makeup and performing on stage.

The movie is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 24, 2026, distributed by Lionsgate in the United States and Universal Pictures internationally. Originally planned for April 2025, it faced delays due to reshoots and production adjustments, pushing it back by a year. This global cinema rollout allows audiences worldwide to experience the film in theaters.

The film opens with Michael Jackson’s childhood in Gary, Indiana which shows his early years as a member of the Jackson 5. The group formation is shown through their first successful songs which include I Want You Back and ABC, and Jackson’s role as the lead vocalist of the group. The story shows his movement into solo work which includes his albums Off the Wall”and “Thriller” that led him to become an international superstar. The film shows family relationships which include his mother, Katherine and his sister LaToya and his brother.

The biopic shows Jackson’s persistent quest for perfection through scenes that demonstrate his artistic work and his desire to achieve stardom. The documentary shows how different people, including Berry Gordy, the Motown producer who helped launch the Jackson 5, affected its music. His musical development from his first song to his current Work shows his journey from discovery to success through this section which uses more than 30 songs to show his growth. The depiction of Jackson shows his authentic personality because it shows him doing normal things while he helps other people.

The key scenes of the film include zombie transformation scenes which they use to show Thriller songs through their precise musical reenactments. The documentary shows how he changed music through his innovative work in music videos and live performances which became important to popular culture.

The documentary presents his record-breaking sales achievements and his multiple award wins as major milestones that led him to become the greatest entertainer. The scenes show his work with others and showcase the musical energy that created songs that became popular during that particular time period. The biopic uses these elements to give audiences a sense of being at his concerts, focusing on the creativity and talent that fueled his success.

Family members and associates, like his lawyer John Branca, appear in supporting roles to show his professional development. The section demonstrates how Jackson influenced the music industry but it stops short of exploring his later career developments.


Treatment of personal struggles and controversies of Michael

The biopic addresses some of Jackson’s personal challenges but mostly demonstrates his positive qualities by showcasing his achievements and his compassionate behavior. The film shows him caring for sick children and hosting sleepovers with his nephews to demonstrate his compassionate nature. The documentary omits all details about child s*xual abuse accusations from the 1990s and 2000s which includes the 1993 case that involved Jordan Chandler and resulted in a civil settlement.

The legal agreements from that settlement forbid any dramatization of the events that resulted in script modifications and the exclusion of all related material. The film does not include allegations that his father, Joe Jackson, s*xually abused him during his childhood. The story underwent changes because the filmmakers wanted to skip those subjects, which resulted in an ending that resembled the positive conclusions found in other music biographical films. The producers denied the allegations of whitewashing yet some people claimed the film discredited accusers while pursuing an objective documentary style.


Production and Cast Decisions for Michael

The Jackson estate financed the production of Michael which Antoine Fuqua directed and John Logan wrote by granting access to music and archival materials. The initial filming finished in May 2024 but the production team needed to do reshoots in June because of legal problems which caused a postponement of the movie’s release. The budget is reported at $155 million. Jaafar Jackson who is Michael’s nephew, plays the main character in his first movie role because the filmmakers selected him based on his physical similarity to Michael Jackson and his acting skills.

Colman Domingo plays Joe Jackson, Nia Long portrays Katherine Jackson, and other cast members include Miles Teller as John Branca and Laura Harrier in a supporting role. Young actor Juliano Krue Valdi portrays Michael Jackson during his childhood. Producers aimed for a single feature film, though rumors suggested a two-part split. Paris Jackson read an early draft and provided notes but distanced herself, citing inaccuracies. The team focused on authenticity in performances and sets to capture Jackson’s essence.
